Play Formatting for One Acts, 10-Minutes Plays, and Monologues

Your play should not exceed a read time of 30 minutes. Please use this script timer to see if your play fits our parameters!
Please provide a front page that includes:

  • A character list for the speaking character, as well as any other characters mentioned in the monologue.

  • The scene and setting.

  • Number your pages using the “different first page” option, so that the numbering begins with the first page of dialogue, not the front page.

Formatting Tips to Remember

  • For spacing, please use single space between character name and line of dialogue BUT double space between the line of dialogue and stage directions/stage directions and character names.

  • For indentations:

CHARACTER NAME INDENTED 4 TABS
(STAGE DIRECTIONS BLOCK INDENTED 6 TABS IN PARENTHESIS)

  • Make lines even (BLOCK indent)

  • Character names to indicate a line of dialogue are capitalized as well as in stage directions BUT NOT in an actual line of dialogue.

  • Setting/Lights up stage directions are indented flush right like normal stage directions but are not in parentheses.

  • Short, tonal stage directions can be directly under the character name in parentheses

  • Dialogue is not indented and always flush left

  • Indicate interruptions with a dash(—)following a line of dialogue

Hybrid Plays

Due to the nature of this category, we have less guidelines! As always, please make sure your submission is in a readable format, and leave us any additional notes when you submit. Similarly, your play should not exceed 30 minutes.

Please provide a front page that includes:

  • A character list for the speaking character, as well as any other characters mentioned in the monologue.

  • The scene and setting.
